The legal profession is governed by various legislation and regulations to maintain the dignity of the practitioners. One restriction includes the ability for lawyers to promote, publicise, or advertise their services.
Unlike their counterparts in some Commonwealth/Common Law jurisdictions, Malaysian lawyers are prohibited from soliciting for business like that of other service providers. For instance they are not permitted to run Facebook, LinkedIn, or Instagram advertisements.
However this does not stop them from sharing their experience or position themselves as an expert in the area of law which they practice within the prescription of those legislation and regulations. Some requirements include:-
- Not disclosing the name of their clients, firms, or the practitioner themselves
- Not endorsing any products or service in their capacity as lawyers, or depicted as endorsers in their capacity as lawyers
- Not advertising a phone-in service
